We ordered cash from Travelex, since it they don't charge a fee and deliver overnight if you order enough to qualify!  The places where you can see the floor are transparent with holograms!  And each bill is slightly different in length.  Very cool!

It’s a simple plan – get up, finish packing, have breakfast, turn in the car, ride to the airport, board a series of planes.   What could go wrong?   Well, nothing really went wrong, so much as slightly awry. We woke before the alarm and had lots of time for a last breakfast with the laid-back morning news as background.   We each brought home a package of Marmite, in case our kids hadn’t had the experience, cleaned up the kitchen, and went back down the hall to finish backing.   This is the first time I’ve ever had to sit on a suitcase to close it!! As we’re leaving we meet the new resident coming in.   He asks how we’re getting to the airport!   We figure he must have been dropped off at the end of the driveway and speculate on how he plans to get around without a car! June 15, 2017 – from Owaka to Te Anau, via the Southern Scenic Route

Yea, this was a tiny little room and we’re out of it before sunrise!   Although the two-lane, curvy road is a little difficult in the pre-dawn, we’ve been on it before as we’re retracing our route to the waterfall from yesterday afternoon.   By the time we’re on new territory the morning is nearly upon us.   Silhouetted against the pre-dawn glow we see a herd of deer!   Then there is the most glorious sunrise. Started out in the dark! We’re hoping for breakfast in one of the tiny towns shown on the Southern Scenic Route map that last night’s host has given us.   He’s quite proud of the map and says people even take them home and frame them!   Unhappily, the towns are even smaller than one might expect.   Not only is nothing open;   nothing is even there except a few houses!   There is a better chance at the Whistling Frog Café which is supposed to be adjacent to a waterfall;   but the frog won’t be op...

June 25, 2017 – Nelson

Up and at ‘em in the Aloha Lodge.   I’ve had time to stretch and dress before Marilyn’s alarm goes off.   She dresses and we go downstairs for our continental breakfast and some “harassment” from Michael.   We have strawberry yogurt and crunchy stuff (mine is chocolate rice crispy-like goodies) and a bit of fruit, with coffee and juice.   After breakfast Marilyn inquires about changing to a room with a bigger bed.   I’m quite used to sleeping on a twin;   but she woke up every time she tried to turn over!   There’s no problem and in a few minutes we’ve moved our things down the hall. We haven’t heard back from Marilyn’s 99s contact about flying or at least having coffee today, so we set off on our own.   We make our way up SH 6 to Founders Park.   They have relocated about two dozen old buildings from Nelson’s past and they are all in perfect condition.   During the week, many of them are utilized by artisans who sell thei...
